All 55 counties have joined together in statewide action for Thursday and Friday. But many are now asking what comes next? What are our terms? What does an injunction mean for me?
First of all, none of this would be possible without all of the hard work so many have put in so far to make this movement a success. Thank you all for your hard work, but it doesn’t end here. In order to keep moving forward, it is good to keep in mind that while school is not in session on Thursday or Friday, teachers should be very careful about being seen out in public. If you are not out on the picket line Thursday or Friday, we encourage you to contribute in other ways such as calling your local legislators or volunteering. Having the public support education is not just important for this movement now but is vital to the success of education in Berkeley County going forward. Especially in light of the next vote for a levy taking place in November. The last levy provided over 100 million dollars to Berkeley County schools and provides many benefits that many educators rely on.
There was also a discussion of what we are asking for, specifically:
- Fully Fund PEIA
- Pay Increase of 5%
- No Charter Schools
- Protect Seniority
- Payroll Deductions protected
- Stop Lowering Teacher Qualifications
And finally, where do we go next? At this moment that all depends on you. We have a few options, such as continuing our work stoppage into next week. Doing so would probably mean an injunction, which could end the strike, as well as lead to the arrest of the presidents of educational organizations in the county, although not individual teachers. Another option is a rolling strike in which a select number of counties, such as 5 out of the 55 counties of WV strike on random days, so that every day at least some counties are continuing the work stoppage, but would make it more difficult to file an injunction. Lastly, we could choose to end all of our efforts at this point. Those in attendance at the meeting were in favor of a rolling walk out but we would like to give everyone a chance to have their voice heard so in the very near future BCEA will be creating a poll in order to decide which option to pursue.
