WVEA leadership has called for statewide action on Thursday and Friday. Berkeley County Schools is still evaluating their response to this announcement, but it is expected they will cancel school for those two days. If school is cancelled by the superintendent it does not result in any action upon any teacher, and the days are simply made up at the end of the year. If he does not call off school we will distribute further information on how to proceed.
Even though it is a walk out it is expected that teachers will still rally outside of school (but not on school property) throughout the normal school day. The best way to accomplish this is to have teachers sign up for times to be at the school so there is a constant presence of teachers at the school throughout the day. Schools are encouraged to work together with surrounding schools in order to help disseminate this information to all teachers, as well as plan more efficiently as a larger group.
In addition, teachers are encouraged to volunteer in other ways throughout the day so the day is not seen as just a day off for teachers. Such as babysitting a colleague’s children as they attend the walk out in front of the school, or helping with meals at the Boys and Girls Club.
